1 〔同じく〕 too; also; 《not》 either; as well; likewise; not surprisingly; like the rest.

●母もやはり医者でした. My mother was also a doctor.

・お兄さんも優秀な生徒だったけど, やっぱり君もできるね. Your brother was a good student, and obviously you come from the same stock.

・どんな英雄だって人の子だ. やはり死ぬのは恐いに違いない. Even the biggest hero is only human; when it comes to dying, he's as afraid as the rest of us.

・今年はどこも春が早かったが, 北海道もやはり例年より早く桜が咲いた. Spring came early this year throughout the country, including Hokkaidō, where the cherries also blossomed earlier than normal.

・「君の意見は?」「私もやはり賛成できません」 “What do you think?”―“I'm afraid I can't agree either.”

2 〔相変わらず〕 still; as before.

●今もやはり東京にお住まいですか. Are you still living in Tokyo?

・やっぱり小さいころからの癖は直らないもんだね. Childhood habits just don't change, do they?

・彼, 今でもやっぱりあんたのこと好きみたいだよ. It looks like he's still sweet on you even now.

・今もやはり時々は釣りをなさいますか. Do you still go out fishing occasionally?

3 〔つまるところ･しょせん〕 after all (is said and done); as one may expect; just…; 〔いずれにしても〕 in any event [case]; no matter what; either way….

●しっかりしているようでもやっぱり子供だね. お母さんが来るとたちまち甘えん坊になって. No matter how self-controlled he seems, he is, after all, a child. The minute his mother shows up he starts to fuss.

・やはり本物は違いますね. There's just no substitute for the real thing.

・暖かいと言ってもやっぱり冬は冬だ. Warm as it is, winter is still winter.

・やっぱりこの年になると体のあちこちにガタが来る. At this age, not surprisingly, the body just starts to give out in different places.

・やっぱり血は争えないわね. お父さんもあなたぐらいの年で上司とぶつかって会社を辞めたのよ. Blood will tell after all―your father got into a fight with his boss and quit his job when he was around your age, too.

・やっぱりわが家はいいねえ. 落ち着くよ. When all is said and done, it's a relief to get home.

●日本チームも健闘したが, やはり彼我の体力の差は歴然としていた. The Japanese team played hard, but in the last analysis there was no overcoming the difference in physical ability.

・やっぱり君か. そんな帽子かぶってる奴はいないからな. I thought it was you. After all, who else would wear such an outrageous hat?

・「試験だめだったよ」「やっぱりね」 “I flunked the exam.”―“It figures.”

・「なんだコンセントが抜けてた」「やっぱり」 “Oh, the plug was out of the socket.”―“What else? | That figures!”

・「ほんとに行かないの?」「やっぱり行く」 “You're really not going?”―“Oh, I guess I will.”

・やっぱりこっちの方がいいかな. I think I like this one better (after all).

・新幹線にしようと思ったが, やはり飛行機で行くことにした. I was going to take the Shinkansen train but I decided to fly after all.
